In May 2018 Deutscher Wetterdienst (DWD) introduced its high resolution numerical weather prediction (NWP) model COSMO-D2 replacing the previous model COSMO-DE. Now, DWD is developing a limited area version of its NWP model ICON to replace COSMO-D2. The presentation will describe the NWP system of DWD with emphasize on its performance for wind energy forecasting in the short to medium range. First results for the limited area model ICON-LAM will be shown.
